Gabry lives a quiet life. As safe a life as is possible in a town trapped between a forest and the ocean, in a world teeming with the dead, who constantly hunger for those still living. She’s content on her side of the Barrier, happy to let her friends dream of the Dark City up the coast while she watches from the top of her lighthouse. But there are threats the Barrier cannot hold back. Threats like the secrets Gabry’s mother thought she left behind when she escaped from the Sisterhood and the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Like the cult of religious zealots who worship the dead. Like the stranger from the forest who seems to know Gabry. And suddenly, everything is changing. One reckless moment, and half of Gabry’s generation is dead, the other half imprisoned. Now Gabry only knows one thing: she must face the forest of her mother’s past in order to save herself and the one she loves.

REVIEW:

After reading DEAD-TOSSED WAVES, the companion novel to THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH  it seems more like a sequel than just a “companion.” I love seeing storylines fill in from one book to another. She satisfied my curiosity with another good story. She weaved another tale around a post-apocalyptic world infected with a sickness killing people. They raise from the dead as zombies and walk around hungry for human flesh. They aren’t hunting, they’re mindlessly hungry to bite and infect. This story is told from the point of view of Gabry. I won’t spill any spoilers but I’ll suffice it to say, she has an intricate story to tell about where she’s going and where she’s from.

This story is layered with opposition. There is so much conflict that it feels as though she left no idea unimagined about “what is the worst that could happen?” The Mudo (zombies), the government, the Recruiters (army-like), the Soulers (cult), more and more. This book isn’t without suspense and worry.

RATING:

I’d say it was a good read but a bit depressing. (But what zombie-world isn’t depressing?) This one is harder to read than the first book. There isn’t much optimism pouring from this character whereas the main character from THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH at least hoped for things. Gabry is the opposite; hopelessness and despair fill the pages of this book. If you can handle the lack of hope, you’ll love this book.(I’m nauseatingly optimistic, so I need to be fed hope to remain sane.) On that note I wanted to rate this book a 2. But it is in fact a really good story. *My favorite part is why she chose this TITLE. Awesomely icky! I’m rating this at 3: A Pretty Good Read.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Like I said with Book 1, this is listed as a Young Adult novel. I think it would be rated “R” in movie ratings because of descriptions of the gore (zombies) and mild sexual content but there was no bad language. It is so frightening, that I would probably warn my teen NOT to read it.

When Alyss Heart, newly orphaned heir to the Wonderland throne, flees through the Pool of Tears to escape her murderous Aunt Redd, she finds herself lost and alone in Victorian London. Befriended by an aspiring author named Lewis Carrol, Alyss tells the violent, heartbreaking story of her young life. Alyss trusts this author to tell the truth so that someone, somewhere will find her and bring her home. But he gets the story all wrong. He even spells her name incorrectly!

Fortunately, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan knows all too well the awful truth of Alyss' story - and he's searching every corner of our world to find the lost princess and return her to Wonderland, to battle Redd for her rightful place as the Queen of Hearts.

The Looking Glass Wars unabashedly challenges our Wonderland assumptions of mad tea parties, grinning Cheshire cats, and a curious little blond girl to reveal an epic battle in the endless war for Imagination.

REVIEW:

This book is a take-off of the well known “Alice In Wonderland.” It is very well written fantasy. It is an intriguing story about the princess of Wonderland, Alyss Heart. Each of the important characters of the story are present and take on new fantastic roles. The Mad Hatter is Hatter Madigan, the queen’s personal bodyguard and the head of Wonderlands elite security force. The letters in “white rabbit” were rearranged to form the name Bibwit Harte, the name of an old albino tutor of the royal family.

This story is fantastically weaved not only around a thrilling storyline about the battle between good, Alyss, and evil, Redd (formerly known as the Queen of Hearts) but it is imaginatively weaved around the playing card and chess themed characters. There is SO much detail; I don’t feel there was a spot missing in the theme of hearts and diamonds, rooks and pawns. It was truly marvelous to see this plot weave its way through a story that had never made sense to me. (I sit and wonder if I liked this version of Alice in Wonderland better than the Disney movie! The answer is, of course, yes!)

RATING:

I’d rate this book a 4: Very Good: A very good choice to read. I’ll probably read the rest of the trilogy.

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control.
Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant.

REVIEW:

This is a charming story about a girl who gets caught in people’s dreams. She gets pulled into other people’s dreams about being naked in a group and no one else notices, about their desires and reliving memories through their dreams. She is struggling to feel normal keeping this secret from everyone until one day she gets sucked into a gruesome nightmare.

This book is only 210 pages and is a very easy read. It is an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Readers. After reading it in one night, I can see why.

RATING:

I give this book a 3: Good: A pretty good read. It’s a good story about a dream catcher. I liked the main character, Janie. She was believable and I really felt for her and the pain she carried for all her secrets and seeing everyone else’s secrets.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

It is simply written but drops the F-bomb a several times. It’s rather PG-13 for all the talk of nakedness and cuss words. I’m sure if it were a movie, it would merely infer the nakedness. There is also a lesbian in the cast of characters.

Review: THE SHORT SECOND LIFE OF BREE TANNER by Stephenie Meyer

TITLE: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
AUTHOR: Stephenie Meyer
GENRE: Young Adult, Paranormal, Romance
PARANORMAL ELEMENT: Vampires, Werewolves
PUBLISHED: Little, Brown and Company 2010

**SPOILER ALERT** (For all Twilight books and this one.)

REVIEW & SYNOPSIS:

This 178 page novella quenched my thirst for more about the Twilight Saga Vampires. I read all four original books in 2009 and loved them all. This is a companion novella to the third book, ECLIPSE. It is a prerequisite to read ECLIPSE before this little story!!

It is about Bree Tanner, the female vampire the Cullens consider keeping to raise as one of their own after the war with the baby vampires that Victoria creates. This book apparently came about as a result of a character synopsis about baby vampires and what they are really like. Bree has a great story and reflects the volatile need for blood as apparently “normal” newborns require.

I appreciate that Stephenie has shared this story with us. In BREAKING DAWN Bella finally becomes a vampire. But she is a super-vampire who can unnaturally control her thirst for human blood. We are told this over and over and it seriously didn’t make me stand in awe of her because there was no proof of what “real” baby vampires were actually like. So if you’re reading the Twilight Saga for the first time and have finished ECLIPSE, read this one next before you read BREAKING DAWN. I’d like to see the affect this has on the opinions of those who’ve read it in that order. Hmm?

So, cheers to Stephenie for feeding my addiction! (I am refusing to read any other vampire stories. I’ve committed to the Twilight Saga for my only source of vamp-tales.) I only have ONE criticism… what the heck is with the “red-hair” on Edward. That confused me!

RATING:

4.  A very good read. I wish she would complete MIDNIGHT SUN. (TWILIGHT, Book 1 from the point of view of Edward.)

SYNOPSIS:

(Courtesy of Goodreads-No Spoilers!)

It is not a peaceful time in the Dells. The young King Nash clings to his throne while rebel lords in the north and south build armies to unseat him. The mountains and forests are filled with spies and thieves and lawless men.

This is where Fire lives. With a wild, irresistible appearance and hair the color of flame, Fire is the last remaining human monster. Equally hated and adored, she had the unique ability to control minds, but she guards her power, unwilling to steal the secrets of innocent people. Especially when she has so many of her own.

Then Prince Brigan comes to bring her to King City, The royal family needs her help to uncover the plot against the king. Far away from home, Fire begins to realize there's more to her power than she ever dreamed. Her power could save the kingdom.

If only she weren't afraid of becoming the monster her father was.

REVIEW:

I’ve seriously fallen in love with fantasy fiction. FIRE is a "companion" book to GRACELING, and it is fantastic. When I cracked open this book, it brought me back to the seven kingdom world she created. It began with a Graceling but the main character was not a Graceling. But it didn’t disappoint. The story is weaved around a monster girl named Fire. Monsters were beautiful creatures in the shape of normal animals but they are gorgeously colored—fucia, turquoise, bronze, etc. Monsters have the ability to control human minds. It was a treat to read about Fire and envision what she looked like with the unnaturally fiery red, orange and pink hair. She captured everyone’s attention in good ways and bad. When a character is written that way you can’t help but be entranced by her too.

Fire is apparently a feminist (as well as Katsa, from GRACELING.) Fire is a believable character but when compared with the main character in the previous novel, it was at first hard to differentiate the two because they are both independent, feminists, push away the love interest and put themselves in unnecessary danger. But after finishing the entire book, I can gladly say they parted and when their separate ways. I just hope Cashore doesn’t use this same type of character for the MC of her third novel.

Fire is the last remaining human-monster in the Dells. A rocky mountainous land where a war is impending and there are plenty of storylines to keep an eager mind busy. Fire has an appreciation for right and wrong and there is plenty of mistrust from everyone because she is a monster. I loved this story.

RATING:

Obviously I give it a 5. Excellent: Worth every minute, I’d probably read it again. The main story wasn’t as good as GRACELING but the ending of FIRE was better! I’m eagerly awaiting the next companion book. (BITTERBLUE by Kristin Cashore.)

RECOMMENDATIONS:

I’d love for my pre-teens and teens to read these. Obviously, they have made my favorites list!
